Week 5: Top Down Shooter Assets

This time I’ve been tasked with creating a set of assets for a top down shooter game. As medieval fantasy is my go to genre I decided to stick to what I’m familiar with and go with what I know. The first asset I designed was the player character, which is a Knight with a crossbow rather than any other creature/humanoid of choice with a gun. The problem I ran into was trying to detail the character to really represent that it’s unique as there’s only so much you can do from a top down view, I tried to tackle this issue by adding additional line detailing to the helmet and arms.

Secondly I designed the projectile which the player will be continuously shooting throughout, which is a simple arrow. However upon finishing the simplistic design I figured that I’d make different variations that may be used within the game, such as fire arrows or ice arrows. Each with their own different coloured arrow tip to symbolise which they are, of course their design can be intensified with particle effects in whichever engine they are used in, like Unity.

Lastly I designed the enemy type, which in this case I went for a Golem. Golems are often used in a vast array of medieval fantasy games as constructs of different elements. It was important that I made these enemy assets with a hitbox in mind as the arrows are going to have to collide with them effectively; therefore I made a rather broad sprite that should facilitate the size of the arrows effectively.

Shown below are each sprite with their appropriate labels:
